Public Housing Programs
How does the Public Housing Program work?
Application: Once
your pre-application is completed and signed by you, it is dated and
time stamped received, processed and placed on the waiting list.
Waiting List: Pre-applications
are then placed on the waiting list according to date and time of the
receipt of the completed application. Incomplete applications will be
returned to the applicant for completion prior to processing. When your
pre-application reaches the top of the waiting list you will be
notified by mail of the needed information to complete the application
process. Once all information is provided and the screening process is
complete, you will be offered housing provided all requirements are
met. The length of the waiting period will vary according to the
availability of units.
Occupying the Unit: - Your income will be reviewed and its source(s) verified.
- Allowable deductions will be verified and deducted to determine unit rent per month.
- A one year lease agreement will be signed and the first month rent collected.
- A refundable security deposit will be collected.
- A small pet is allowed according to the pet policy. An additional pet deposit is required.
- A beginning inspection of the unit will be conducted by a Housing Authority staff member and the resident.
One Year Lease Required: The
lease is for one year. The resident may terminate the lease with a
thirty (30) day written notice to the Housing Authority. The Housing
Authority may terminate the lease with a fourteen (14) day written
notice for non-payment of rent, thirty (30) day written notice for
repeated violations of the lease agreement and/or rules of occupancy,
and a three (3) day written notice for drugs and other criminal
activity.
Rental Payments: Residents make payment for rent
and any other charges to the Housing Authority of Salt Lake City. Rent
is due and payable the first day of each month. A late fee will be
charged for delinquent payments.
What are my Responsibilities as a Resident in Public Housing?
- Report all changes in income and family composition as they occur.
- Pay rent on time.
- Abide by the lease agreement and rules of occupancy.
- Provide a thirty (30) day written notice to the Housing Authority when you plan to move.
- Keep the dwelling unit in a safe, and sanitary condition at all times.
- Report any repair problems to the Housing Authority promptly.
Family Public Housing
The
Housing Authority of Salt Lake City owns and operates conventional
Public Housing for families, the elderly and people with disabilities.
Public Housing is subsidized by the Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) and serves those at or below 80% of the area median
income. Potential program participants are not only screened for income
eligibility but also for housekeeping practices, previous landlord
references, credit references and criminal background check. The
program participant will pay 30% of income for rent.
We
have family units scattered throughout the City. The use of scattered
public housing sites promotes the philosophy of mixed-income
neighborhoods. This benefits the community by avoiding the well-known
problems and pitfalls of large concentrated public housing "projects".
Scattered sites also meet the needs of our residents for safe, decent
and affordable housing. Maintenance Request
