Homeless Veteran Programs

THE VALOR HOUSE
The Valor House is our newest Transitional Housing Program for sixty-one (61) homeless veterans and is located in Building Three on the Veterans Administration Medical Campus. The Valor House is a partnership between the Housing Authority of Salt Lake City and the Department of Veterans Affairs Salt Lake City Health Care System. The target population is any veteran eligible for VA services who is either homeless or in imminent danger of becoming homeless. This transitional housing will allow the veteran to stay in the program for up to twenty-four (24) months. The goal of the partnership is to resolve the veteran&s problems and move them toward an independent lifestyle where they can live in the community and become viable members of society. Clinical case management is provided by the VA staff. This is an important element in helping the veteran become independent.

The Valor House offers safe, secure, and affordable housing for veterans. The building is divided into two wings. Wing C is the entry level for all participants and provides shared rooms and community showers. Wing C has fifteen (15) rooms with thirty-four (34) beds. Wing D has private rooms with either shared baths or private baths. Wing D also has a full size kitchen available for the participant’s use. Wing D has twenty-four (24) rooms.

The goal for this program is to assist veterans in obtaining permanent housing, increase skills and income by requiring them to work on a full-time basis. In order to stay in the program, veterans are expected to complete the vocational job training and eventually be placed in a full-time, higher paying position with a community employer. Case management is a strong support system in this program and assists the veteran in utilizing programs and services in their own neighborhood rather than return to familiar agencies in the homeless community. Case managers provides skills training and counseling enabling the veteran to maintain their residency.
