Homeless Veteran Programs
THE VALOR HOUSE The
Valor House is our newest Transitional Housing Program for sixty-one
(61) homeless veterans and is located in Building Three on the Veterans
Administration Medical Campus. The Valor House is a partnership between
the Housing Authority of Salt Lake City and the Department of Veterans
Affairs Salt Lake City Health Care System. The target population is any
veteran eligible for VA services who is either homeless or in imminent
danger of becoming homeless. This transitional housing will allow the
veteran to stay in the program for up to twenty-four (24) months. The
goal of the partnership is to resolve the veteran&s problems and
move them toward an independent lifestyle where they can live in the
community and become viable members of society. Clinical case
management is provided by the VA staff. This is an important element in
helping the veteran become independent.
The
Valor House offers safe, secure, and affordable housing for veterans.
The building is divided into two wings. Wing C is the entry level for
all participants and provides shared rooms and community showers. Wing
C has fifteen (15) rooms with thirty-four (34) beds. Wing D has private
rooms with either shared baths or private baths. Wing D also has a full
size kitchen available for the participant’s use. Wing D has
twenty-four (24) rooms.

Two
meals a day are provided to all participants. Laundry facilities are
available on both Wings for the veteran’s personal laundry and linen
services are provided by the VA. This program is the first of its kind in the United States. THE VALOR APARTMENTS
| The
Valor Apartments are located at 718 East 700 South. It is a three story
brick building consisting of fourteen (14) one bedroom apartments. This
program is unique because it provides affordable housing, intensive
case management, job training and job placement to homeless veterans.
The program offers homeless veterans independent living opportunities
and vocational training with a supportive environment.

The
goal for this program is to assist veterans in obtaining permanent
housing, increase skills and income by requiring them to work on a
full-time basis. In order to stay in the program, veterans are expected
to complete the vocational job training and eventually be placed in a
full-time, higher paying position with a community employer. Case
management is a strong support system in this program and assists the
veteran in utilizing programs and services in their own neighborhood
rather than return to familiar agencies in the homeless community. Case
managers provides skills training and counseling enabling the veteran
to maintain their residency.
Transitional Housing
The
Transitional Housing for families and individuals is a supportive
housing program through HUD. The purpose of this program is to enable
individuals and families to break the cycle of homelessness and become
self-sufficient. This program provides intensive case management
services and housing in scattered homes throughout the Salt Lake City
area.
The supportive services is provided by The Road Home and
Volunteers of America, Utah and is a critical component to the program.
The resident pays 30% of their income for rent. There are sixteen units
set aside for this program including six duplexes and four single
family homes all owned by the Housing Authority and are scattered
throughout the site. All of the homes are located in stable and family
oriented neighborhoods. Residents have the opportunity to practice
maintaining an apartment or house, getting along with their neighbors
and paying rent on time.
Transitional Housing Work Program
The
Transitional Housing Work Program is a two year transitional housing
for individuals who are working in job training or full time employment
in the community. The residents pay 30% of their income for rent. The
project is twelve one-bedroom units at two different sites. The 8-plex
is located within walking distance to the new Trax transportation
system and numerous bus routes. The building is located on 1700 South
and is an excellent location offering a variety of choices to the
residents to get to work and participate in the community. The Salt
Lake Community College is one block from the apartments. The 4-plex is
located in a cul-de-sac in a quiet residential neighborhood. The
building is one-half block from the bus line and the residents have
access to grocery stores and community services. Case management is
provided by The Road Home and Volunteers of America, Utah.
The
Transitional Housing Work Program packages decent, affordable housing
with vocational job training and support, providing gradual process for
movement back into the community and independent living.
